How to Root Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge with TWRP Recovery!

For those of you who want to root and install custom ROMs, you will want to root your Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge with TWRP recovery.

This method is ONLY for Android 5.0.1 or 5.0.2, for Android 5.1.1, please see our update root method on How to root Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge on Android 5.1.1!

This is the preferred method since it will root and install TWRP recovery simultaneously on your Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge and will work on ALL Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge models except AT&T SM-G920A, SM-G925A and Verizon SM-G920V, SM-G925V since they have locked bootloaders (unless you got the developer’s edition).  If you don’t neeed TWRP recovery, you just want root, then follow How to Root Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge instead.

This root method works on the following models:

  • SM-G920F, SM-G925F (international)
  • SM-G920I, SM-G925I (international)
  • SM-G9200
  • SM-G9208
  • SM-G9209
  • SM-G920K, SM-G925K (KT Olleh Korean)
  • SM-G920L, SM-G925L (LG U+ Korean)
  • SM-G920S, SM-G925S (SK Telecom Korean)
  • SM-G920P, SM-G925P (Sprint)
  • SM-G920T, SM-G925T (U.S. T-Mobile)
  • SM-G920R4 SM-G925R4 (US Cellular)
  • SM-G920T1, SM-G925T1
  • SM-G920W8, SM-G920W8 (Canadian)

Step 1. Power off your Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge then hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together until you see a warning screen like shown below:

Hey, I was thinking about doing this on the SM-G920V (Verizon S6). Before I do it, I just wanted to see if there was anyway I could see the Knox status. I tried the Volume-Down + Power + menu button. and that brings me to the Odin screen. But I do not see any reference to Knox in the information. Is that normal? what does everyone else’s look like?

  12. Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is fundamental and all. Nevertheless just imagine if you added some great visuals or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and videos, this website could undeniably be one of the very best in its niche. Terrific blog!

Thanks for such a detailed post. I am on OE3 firmware (gm-925I) and its blocking the installation of custom recovery. While i press start and immediately hold volume up,home center and power button Odin says failed and on the phone it gives some message saying custom recover blocked or something. Any other way to Root? Thanks in advance !!

  28. shrikanth says:

Okay now i did it !! I had switched on the “Find my phone” thing which was blocking the custom recovery installation. Read it on droidviews and after disabling it i was easily able to root it. You might want to include this as well. It might help people like me 🙂

I’m using us cellular s6 edge plus sm-G 928R, can I use this method to install Tmobile software on the phone. The phone is unlocked and is currently connected to Tmobile network, however I would like to have WiFi calling, which only supported if you have Tmobile os. Thanks

does my galaxy s6 G920F MID root by the same way? please

  44. TAZ says:

you said: “Step 9. Hit “Start” then IMMEDIATELY hold down the Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together.”
What about not check “REBOOT” in ODIN and let phone to terminate installation and after 1-2 minutes reboot the phone by yourself (if possible remove the battery)? So, in this case, you will start the phone directly into recovery mode without having to hurry (or need to be quick to press VOLUME UP + HOME + POWER). 🙂
