How to Root Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge!

For those of you who want to root your Samsung Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge, here’s a step-by-step tutorial.  This root method uses CF-Auto Root by ChainFire, which only gives you root but does not install a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP recovery.

This method is ONLY for Android 5.0.1 or 5.0.2, for Android 5.1.1, please see our update root method on How to root Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge on Android 5.1.1!

If you want to root and install CWM or TWRP recovery, see How to Root Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge using TWRP Recovery instead.

This root method is recommended if you just need to root your Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge.  Also, by rooting, you will trip the KNOX counter, which will void your warranty.  Most U.S. carriers do not check for KNOX counter but most Samsung services do if you try to return your phone for warranty later on.  If this is your first time rooting, we highly suggest you to get insurance on your phone (that way you can always get a new phone if they don’t accept your phone for warranty).

This root method DOES NOT erase anything on your phone, it only roots your phone.

Unfortunately we can’t root our phones on a Mac until the PIT file can be found for this device… I have had no luck and Jodin just throws an error message when trying to get the PIT file for it automatically. Damn I need my desktop computer back up and running! Anybody have any feedback on this? Thanks in advance and stay HOA!

Hey, I just followed your method, and now the phone will not load up after it reboots. Its stuck on the first screen where it says “Samsung Galaxy S6 edge” with a black background and white letters. Can you help me fix this, I’m stuck. My phone is the model SM-G925T

    • Justin says:

Anyone that used the wrong file, just Odin back to stock and try again! You should be able to find the Odin file on XDA developers in the carrier specific forums… Hope that helps!

  3. Greg says:

Hi, don’t use the file for s6 edge, it won’t work. Instead use file for S6 – this will work on S6 edge.

  4. Be says:

I have the same problem as Mario, I used the S6 edge SM-G925T file and my phone was stuck at the Galaxy S6 Edge screen. Listed to Greg and used the S6 file and I keep getting bootloop at the S6 edge logo when it first turns ON.

    Can someone please help

Hi try CF-Root G920F instead. Mine is a S6 G920I and I also got stuck at boot up using CF-Root 920I. Once I changed to G920F, it works. Last resort try G920T.

  5. Steve says:

Still don’t see the Sprint model # SM-G920P on the CF-autoroot site. 8(

    • Dustin says:

that shit’s pissing me off. how they gonna make a root for every phone but sprint? doesn’t even cricket have a root? what kinda shit?

  6. Steve says:

MAX, are you going to have a method for Verizon soon… I wasn’t going to root my new s6 edge but I want to use keepchat witch automatically saves all snapchats… Keepchat and snapshare require root I believe

  7. Hey Max, wanna start with thanking you for all the work you do for us and your time in it. I have a quick question for about my Verizon Galaxy s6 edge. In your prognoses do you think there’ll be a method to root it? I have 2 weeks to play with it, in case i wanna change the device to something else, but without being able to root it, i see S6 useless. Please get back to me, it would help me to make right decision
    Thanks buddy

    • Max Lee says:

Yeah cannot root it, stay away from Verizon if you need root. The Verizon Note 4 does not have root since it came out over 6 months ago so…. BUT you can grab developer’s version which has unlocked bootloader.

    • Justin says:

I just got my laugh of the day! Russ said Verizon root and Verizon in the same paragraph! LOL Sorry man but I had to say it, Verizon are some schmucks and they charge you for your phone but it’s really not yours as you cannot do anything to it. They have totally nurtured all of the Galaxy phones starting with the Note 3 is when it started to get really tough. I left them 4 T-Mobile at the end of 2014 and I have a total of 6 rooted phones sitting in front of me and they are ALL T-Mobile branded phones cause they don’t lock the bootloaders and make your phone seem like an iPhone! Fuck Verizon and their shenanigans! 😉 But, good news! You can always switch or just stay with them and be sure to stay High ON Android Every day! Have a good one my brotha from anotha Motha!

  8. Thanks guys! Def got to think of switching carriers

  9. Vinny says:

I tried using this method for my Rogers S6 Edge (SM-G925W8) using the SM-G925F CF Auto root file. However once I do it I get stuck in boot loop. Can anyone help?

    Thank you!

    • Justin says:

Did you use the newest Odin? 3.10

      • Vinny says:

        Hi Justin,

        Yes I’m using Odin3 v3.10.6.exe

      • Vinny says:

Anything else I could be missing?

        • Justin says:

Have you tried using the CF Root package for the T-Mobile variant? This is the one I have and I used it flawlessly. Usually, the Canadian models are almost exactly the same as T-Mobile’s models. I see you are trying to root yours with the unlocked Edge variants CF root package and they are different and that’s why custom kernels will not work with International models that are made for T-Mobile models.. Even though it has been verified that some people have had success with that version I would still try the SM-G925T CF root package. Let me know if that works as it should?

          • Justin says:

Or actually just try the SM-G920T CF root if the other one does not work… One of them should get you rooted for sure! As long as you have the correct drivers installed and ODIN is recognizing your device you should be able to get root fairly easy.

          • Vinny says:

This is so strange! I download both the CF Root package (G925T & G920T) the G925T version just restarted my phone and the screen was stuck on the samsung part. When I tried the G920T it boot loops again… 🙁

          • Vinny says:

Is there something I have to click in the option settings on Odin? Right now the only things that are ticked are
            -Auto Reboot
            -F. Reset Time

            Should i click something else?

  10. Justin says:

Are you sure you have KNOX disabled under system settings/security? Cause the 920T file should work fine for you…. I have seen so many people do this with no issues so i am stumped with yours. The only CF roots you should try are the 920T or the 920F. Those two are confirmed working by several people for your model. If you have USB Debugging enabled and have tried the G920F CF root then I am out of ideas… Also be sure to try another usb cable and USB port b4 you try again. Please try the G920F file and let me know if it works please??

    • Vinny says:

Oh! I do not have USB Debugging enabled, maybe that is the resason.

      • Justin says:

        YUP, that’s the reason bud!

      • Justin says:

So now try it with the the G920F or 920T and u should be good!

        • Vinny says:

Still did not work! 🙁 However I did not diable KNOX in the settings, I’ll try again! wish me luck…

          • Justin says:

contact me at shojus at gmail . com on Google Hangouts for more help if you need assistance.

        • Vinny says:

          Hey Justin,

Quick question could you give me a quick walkthrough on how to diable KNOX?

          • Vinny says:

Actually under the Device Security the “KNOX active protection” is turned off…. I have NO idea what is going on.. if I’m missing anything else or you can think of something let me know!

            Thanks guys.

          • Justin says:

I wish I could help you out but I have no idea why it’s not working. I suggest you go on xda developers forums and ask questions with others that have your same device. I did quite a bit of looking around for you and even talked with someone that had the sam model and they had zero problems with root so I would suspect that it is something with your setup. If I could remotely connect to your computer I could figure it out but without actually being able to see what’s going on I have no clue… If you want some help I would be willing to help over a program called Teamviewer, but you would have to download that as well. My Google hangouts is if you would like to communicate more but this way of communication is difficult. Contact me there if you would like further assistance.

  11. Justin says:

I know how it feels to be SUPER frustrated and I don’t like it! Lol I really wanted to help but something is not right on his end. I’m thinking it has to do with the drivers. I am a disabled veteran so I have PLENTY of time on my hands so I don’t mind giving back… 🙂

  12. Austin Elliott says:

Is there any release of a sprint model yet? SM-G920P?

    • Justin says:

Yes, there is 2 different root methods for the Sprint model. One trips the KNOX counter and enables you to flash roms and kernels via TWRP and the other method, “PING-PONG”, does not trip your KNOX counter but you cannot install a custom recovery. You can read up on these methods on XDA forums.

  13. Hey Maxx, please create tutorial on how to flash custom recovery on Samsung Galaxy s6 Verizon Variants. It would help a lot man.

    • Justin says:

You gotta do a factory reset on the phone too… After using Odin it does not fully wipe your device. Try that and you should be golden!

  16. Muhammad says:

i rooted my galaxy s6 successfully, but now a new update of su binary has came, my question is; how do I install the new update of su binary? i can’t do it on the phone because the installation fails!

  17. Alex says:

Does this method work for AT&T?

  18. Alex says:

Nevermind. Just read that it does not.

  19. Raymond says:

    HEADS UP!!!!

For T-mobile users (assuming the same for other carriers too), who are planning to root S6/S6 Edge make sure to keep knox turned off in user settings if it is not already turned off by default. If this is not done, and you follow the process here or the TWRP procees it is a 9/10 possibility your phone will get stuck in boot loop after a recovery is installed. If you turned knox on like me, unknowing the consequence, then followed this tutorial, you must then reset your phone using ChainFire recovery.

Once reset and knox is confirmed off, follow this method or TWRP method again and you should no longer boot loop.

  20. keith says:

To those who wants to root without tripping knox just google “pingpong root xda”. It works on my galaxy s6 fido g920w8 gold, on some odd reason on white s6 g920w8 pingpong doesn’t work so use kinguser, then after migrate to supersu. Its all in xda. This should also work on Variants of Edge and S6 T/W8. Canada rogers should work its basicly same as fido.

looking for someone to fully rooting my S6 Edge

  25. Taz says:

Just thought I’d leave a comment, I tried the pre 5.1.1 method to root my S6 and was stuck in a boot loop, and couldnt get back into the phone to try your 5.1.1 method. What I did was just installed the kernel using odin and then all was good, no need to go into ‘developer mode’ or anything else. Now running a slim 5.1.1 rom.

I have a verizon S6 920v stuck in a bootloop after puttn the wrong twrp on it. Any ideas on how to restore factory firmware, or where 2 even get it?

    • Naado Don says:

yes, go to bro, you will need to create an account
however u need to know your model number and at LEAST the last 4 digits of your build number
OR your baseband version number (same result).
This will allow you free of cost to get to download the correct firmware to restore your device. 100% works, i’ve been in a bootloop already, to be exact it was yesterday

    • Naado Don says:

btw, which model number did you download in attempting to root your device?

  28. Aaron says:

    Thanks bro! & its 920r4

  29. Steve S says:

My screen is struck on the blue downloading screen and says blocked by FAP lock and is frozen smg928t in the model

  30. Royce says:

I haven’t had any luck with doing it on my phone (Sprint (SM-G920P)).
Seeing as how I can’t find a PIT for it either, I’m not having luck in the department at all.
